about

These songs were written over the course of about a year, from 2013-2014. I was living at my parents house and recorded them in the closet in the room i was staying in. I was having a bad time and i was trying to record tomorrow in the bathroom and this little kid was taking a bath on the other side of the wall and he was playing with toys and splashing and making a whole bunch of racket and my sensitive condensor mic was picking up most of it, so i was getting in the habit of not even caring if there were background noises. But then my grandma comes up to me and says, "hey we cleared out this closet and you should turn it into your recording studio and just record all your stuff in there! They were very caring and helpful and it was nice for me to make music around my parents, something i had kind of been afraid of doing before. That's where the electronic songs came in actually, I was able to make those in silence with headphones and not bother anyone late at night. I remember doing the vocals for 'Head Low' in my car just so I could be a bit louder than usual. But after i had the closet I could be a bit louder and more comfortable and thats when i was able to make the louder songs like 'Domino' and 'A Note From the Last Pilot'. I lived off of making and recording these songs. I didn't have anyone around and i felt very lonely and defeated, and making this album is what got me through it. I also thought a lot about what I liked to hear and what others like to hear, and i combined the two together. I took some elements from modern pop and hip hop and incorporated it into my rhythm section. I would record a loose take of a song, spend days adding electronic beats and synths, then delete all the real stuff i did and re record it all to the electronic stuff to create a more natural atmosphere, as if i was playing in a band of robots. It was a great process for recording and i learned a lot about doubling things and about when do be simplistic and when not to be.
